Through Cornwall With A
Camera
An Artist's Pilgrimage
Amongst Miners And MethodistsAuthor:
Henry Hawkins Copyright:
1896
Description: Published
by Thomas Mitchell of London, 128 pages, 87 rare photographs by the
author taken expressly for this work.
This is a beautiful book and captures
the West of Cornwall as it was at the turn of the 20th century. Not only
does the author capture the famous landscapes of the west, he also
captures photographs of everyday people & places. Places I recognize,
such as Hellesveor Chapel & Amalebra Cottage that once belonged to my
great grandmother Catherine Berryman. Perhaps a place relating to your
ancestor is shown amongst the many photos. These are not the typical
photographs of the seaside often found in books about Cornwall, the inland
is covered equally.
However it is not just about the photographs,
this book has descriptive and informative text detailing all the area of
Penwith as well as the Lizard and a bit about Falmouth.
There are also two very interesting
chapters on "The Antiquities of Cornwall" and on "The Jews
In Cornwall". Detail ->

Cornish
Patriotic And Dialect Songs
Author: R. J. Noall
Copyright: 1934
Description: 17
pages; There were very few copies of this book printed, mostly they are in
the hands of collectors.
I have included three versions of the book;
firstly there is the originals as scanned, warts and all; then there is a
slightly cleaned up version, without losing the feel of the original; and
lastly there is a B&W version that will not display as nicely, but is
optimized for printing on an inkjet printer.
The nice thing about this book in Adobe
Acrobat format is the ability to simply click [PRINT] and presto a nice copy
of the sheet music, need 10 copies for a little sing-song, no problem. Heck
you could even have a laptop mounted on top of the organ or piano and play
along whilst reading it from the screen. Music instructors could project it
onto a screen for a whole choir to see! Great idea for your next Cornish
gathering, just a handful of songs but what rarities they are.
If you like this book you might also enjoy Cornish
Song Book which contains many of the more familiar tunes. Detail ->

Twenty
Years At St. Hilary Author:
Bernard Walke
Copyright: 1935
Description: 307
pages, fully indexed. A lovely book, an autobiography of Bernard Walke the
priest of the Catholic church at St. Hilary, but more than that a look at
the people and lives of West Penwith from the time of WW1 until the early
1930s. Many locals are mentioned by name. Quite interesting look at the
tinners at a time of great hardship when most of the mines lay dormant with
thousands out of work.
This is a rare and quite expensive book, so
the availability on CD is a very welcome opportunity to add it to your
library for a fraction of the cost.
Book is scanned at 300 DPI grayscale, but
is full indexed and searchable. Detail->
