Perranzabuloe - The Lost Church Found

Author: C. Trelawny Collins
Copyright: 1839

Description: 294 pages. Fully indexed and fully searchable.

This is the story of the church built near the site of St. Piran's oratory his original church in Cornwall. This replacement church was built in the 10th century and in use until the early 1800s when encroaching sands forced it to be abandoned. St. Piran is the patron saint of tinners (tin miners), but in Cornwall he is now commonly thought of as representing Cornwall and it is his flag, a white cross on a black background that is associated as being the Cornish flag. This book was written contemporary with the events of the church being abandoned. A relatively scarce work and an important part of not only Cornwall's history but that of Christianity in Britain. Here is an interesting link.  Detail ->

By The Rivers Of Water
Being a Brief Sketch of the Life of Sampson Rogers

Author: Stella Rogers Forbes
Copyright: 1933

Description: 98 pages, one photograph of Sampson Rogers. No index, but as all current releases from Belerion Books are searchable this is not a matter.

This is the privately printed biography of Sampson Rogers of Cornwall who emigrated to America. It details the family history in and around Helston, with some of the family emigrating to Australia, some remaining home in Cornwall. Sampson and family emigrated in 1866, first to Pennsylvania then on to Mineral Point Wisconsin, home to many of their neighbours from back home in Cornwall, finally settling down to a successful business in Chicago. A fascinating and very detailed look at an emigrant life in the land of opportunity. Even if you aren't connected to the Rogers family or even have family in Mineral Point or Chicago it is a fascinating read and look back at things in those days just after the American Civil War. Perhaps your family is one of the many mentioned in association with the Rogers family, through marriage, friendship or business.

Norman Architecture In Cornwall

Author: Edmund H. Sedding
Copyright: 1909

Description: 630 pages, 164 plates which include photographs, floor plans, diagrams of the churches discussed as well as some of the manor houses. Fully indexed and fully searchable. Also includes a large extremely detailed Ecclesiastical Map of Cornwall. This is a very rare and costly book and is perhaps the most detailed and authoritative work on this style of architecture in Cornwall. The author E. H. Sedding (d 1921), was a member of the notable West Country Sedding family of architects. He designed churches in New Zealand, as well as in Cornwall and Devon.

I am quite proud of this facsimile CD, I really went the extra mile and spent many more hours getting the detail just right. Consequently I am forced to charge a slight bit more for this than other CDs. You can download the preface. Detail ->

The Martin Family Of Stithians In Cornwall

Author: Edward A. Martin
Copyright: 2009

Description: Much sought after and hard to find in print form, the author Mr. Edward Martin has agreed to release his indispensable work on CD. The CD is faithful to the original and additionally is fully searchable for any word, not just indexed words. 320 pages with detailed maps, family trees and colour Coats of Arms. Details are included regarding those Martins who emigrated from Cornwall to Australia, Canada, South Africa and elsewhere. The companion volumes are offered below.

This pedigree of the Martin family of Stithians contains details of approximately 2,900 Martins and of about 1,100 of their wives and husbands. It has taken well over twenty years to compile and in that time the author has made many changes and corrections to his original work. Even now it is impossible to be certain about all the descents -the Martins were very numerous and tended to use many of the same Christian names. in time some of the descents presented here will prove to be erroneous, however this volume presents the best approximation to the truth that is possible on the current known evidence.

In organising this work the author has attempted to follow each line in order of seniority, though for the earlier generations there are often few clues as to the seniority of the various lines-in these cases the order has had to be arbitrary. It is worth noting that the parish registers of Stithians are very poor for the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. These have been crosschecked with the contemporary Bishop's Transcripts, but these do not exist for every year.

Stithians Families
A Cornish Community

Author: Edward A. Martin
Copyright: 2009

Description: Much sought after and hard to find in print form, the author Mr. Edward Martin has agreed to release his indispensable work on CD. The CD is faithful to the original and additionally is fully searchable for any word, not just indexed words. 205 pages with detailed maps, family trees and colour Coats of Arms and colour photographs. This is a companion to the above title BB044 and also to BB046 Stithians Families II.

In many parish histories the ordinary people occur as inconsequential extras: mere names that are subordinate to grander themes. In this book the author has given the detailed histories of ten families that played an important part in the society of one parish in western Cornwall. As well as chronicling their lives, he has also attempted to look at their social background, origins, interrelationships and ultimate dispersal around the world.

It is hoped that this work will be of interest not only to those who, like the author, are descended from some of the families featured in the book, but also to more general historians as an illustration of the human element that went into the making of one Cornish community.

Surnames covered in these detailed histories and genealogies are: BATH of St. Breward & Stithians, BISHOP of St. Gluvias & Stithians, DUNSTON, DUNSTAN of Stithians, GILL of Morval & Stithians, MORTON of Launceston & Stithians, ODGER of Mullion, Crowan & Stithians, PEARCE of Gwennap & Stithians, PENHALURICK of Stithians, REED of Wendron & Stithians, & SPARGO of Mabe & Stithians. Of course many other surnames married into these lines, so chances are if you have family from Stithians you will want all three books.

*Note: The index for this volume is contained in BB046, however this unit is fully searchable.
*Note: The print facility is not available on this CD due to copyright agreement.
